Bio

Don Trone is a 1977 graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy and currently serves as the class president. He spent ten years on active duty as both a deck watch officer and as a Coast Guard aviator flying helicopters. Upon leaving active duty, he began his career on Wall Street, eventually launching three firms and a foundation which have been involved in standards development, technology and training to support investment decision-makers.

Don Trone's expertise is in providing leadership training to stewards who serve in critical decision-making roles; specifically, advisors, trustees, boards, and investment committees. Don is regarded as one of the foremost experts on the subject of fiduciary responsibility, and has been named by numerous magazines as one of the most influential people in the financial services industry. He has served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Labor, and has testified before the U.S. Senate Finance Committee.

In 2007, Don took an eighteen month break from Wall Street to accept an offer to return to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to head the newly established Institute for Leadership. One of his many projects was to find a concise answer to the question: "Why was the Coast Guard so successful in its response to Katrina, when nearly every other government agency failed?" His research led him to the ancient Greek philosophy of "ethos" — the Coast Guard's success was due to the fact that it has a well-defined ethos. Regardless of any facet of the mission of the U.S. Coast Guard, you will find a consistency in its leadership behaviors, core values, and decision-making process.

Don has a Masters Degree in Financial Services from The American College; has completed post-graduate studies at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and at Trinity Episcopal Seminary; and, holds the GFS™ (Global Fiduciary Strategist) professional designation. He has authored or coauthored twelve books on portfolio management and investment fiduciary responsibility. His most recent book is Freedom From Wealth (McGraw Hill, 2011), which he coauthored with Charles Lowenhaupt.

Don and his wife, Diane, live in Mystic, CT.
